114 students at Southside High School have earned AP Scholar
Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.
Three FSPS teachers won 2014 Bessie B. Moore Awards for their outstanding incorporation of economic projects into their lesson planning. Tracy Floyd and Kristina Thrift – both first grade teachers at Woods Elementary School – won in the Newcomer Category, and Kathryn Robinson – English teacher at Chaffin Junior High School – won in the Veteran Category. These three FSPS teachers were among 13 Arkansas educators recognized by the organization at a gala luncheon on November 13 at the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock.
In November, students from Fort Smith Public Schools competed at the All-Region Orchestra auditions. There were 110 junior high and high school students who earned chairs, including nine first chair placements. 
Fort Smith Public Schools earned the number one ranking among mid-size school districts in Knovation’s netTrekker Digital Learning Awards Program. The national program recognizes districts using digital resources to create engaging learning experiences, while promoting independent learning. 
The Arkansas Association of Continuing and Adult Education recently named FSPS Adult Education Center employee Donna Smith the Outstanding Paraprofessional of the Year. Smith received the award in October at the annual Arkansas Adult Education Conference in Little Rock.

Board of Education

School Board meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Service Center Auditorium, located in Building B of the Service Center Complex, 3205 Jenny Lind Road. The meetings are open to the public.
