The Fort Smith Public Schools are partnering with UAFS to bring another option to juniors and seniors who plan to attend college after graduation.
Concurrent Credit allows students to earn college hours free of charge while maintaining a
regular high school schedule. Taught by adjunct professors from UAFS on Northside and Southside campuses, students are jump-starting degrees by completing courses like College Algebra, English Composition and Psychology among other core college classes.
Northside senior Lauren Krissman is currently enrolled in three Concurrent Credit courses.“It is nice because it allows me to earn college hours for free,” said Krissman. “Plus, my teachers are great.”
Career Development Facilitator Stephanie Freeman views Concurrent Credit as an opportunity for high school students who are college ready to experience a college level class. It is also a chance for students to get ahead in pursuing their post-secondary goals.
“Concurrent options for students in high school give them the opportunity to start accruing college credit early and for free,” said Freeman. “This venture will allow them to spend less time and money in college later. In turn, allowing that student to further their education in college or enter the workforce.”
Currently there are 140 FSPS students taking advantage of this cost saving opportunity.
