Twins Wiles and Walker Wiggins are already making a name for themselves in the world of science. The two Ramsey Junior High freshmen were recently named Best of State at the Arkansas State Science Fair for their entry, “Crude Awakening: The Study of Oil Absorption Efficiency of Various Materials.” The two also took home a first place win for the same project at the Northwest Arkansas Science and Engineering Fair that was held in March.
The project tested 18 different materials to determine which was the most efficient at absorbing oil from water. The amount of oil removed and the amount of water the material absorbed were both measured. Their focus was on testing for the most efficient material−one that removed the most oil but the least amount of water.
Seven other students from Fort Smith also placed at the State Science Fair. Maddie Linam was given a special award by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. John Clayton won the American Society of Clinical Chemistry Award. Alberto Steward, Maddie Linam, Cole Rickard, Hanna Barr and Breck Cogswell all received Honorable Mention for their entries.
The Wiggins’ first place win at the NWA Science and Engineering Fair makes them eligible to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. In May, they will travel to Los Angeles to represent the state of Arkansas.
