Dr. Ginni McDonald, Principal of Northside High School in the Fort Smith School District, was recently named the Arkansas Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP) Principal of the Year. Dr. Richard Abernathy, AAEA Executive Director, presented Dr. McDonald with the award at her school on April 22.
This award is given each year to an Arkansas secondary level principal who has succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students, and has been acknowledged by peers for exemplary contribution to the profession. Dr. McDonald, along with other state Principals of the Year, will attend and participate in the Principals Institute and recognition event in Washington, D.C. in the fall.
Dr. McDonald is in her fifth year as principal at Northside High School and has served a total of 13 years as an administrator. She is involved with numerous professional organizations and is active in her community. She noted that she feels her role as principal of Northside is both an honor and a privilege. She went on to say “A vital part of my job is to ensure teachers have high expectations and students are able to persevere as they work to meet those expectations. I am particularly excited about a student ‘unconference’ conference we began this year entitled ‘Grit, Goals, and Graduation (#3G)’. This student conference is a continuation of the mindset that goals can be achieved through perseverance and resilience.”
One of Dr. McDonald’s teachers stated “Dr. McDonald models values, beliefs and attitudes of higher performance every day. She does this in an urban high school with 1,700 students. Dr. McDonald believes that all students and staff should be held to high expectations. She has modeled this belief.”
