Southside Memorabilia Auction Complete

Fort Smith Public Schools completed the auction of Rebel memorabilia on Saturday, March 11, 2017 with a crowd estimated to have exceeded 200 people. Auction managers Looper Auction and Realty exhausted the inventory of specific pieces and groups of items in about four hours. Proceeds from the auction totaled $19,123.11. Security and custodial fees for the auction will be deducted from this total. District officials believe that the auction included all memorabilia stored by the District following the retirement of the former mascot and associated symbols in July 2015.

A list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the auction has been compiled below along with answers:

  1. Why was there an auction? Should the district be selling these items?
Following the mascot change in 2015, items that featured the former mascot began to be replaced. As items were replaced, items featuring the former mascot were collected and placed in storage as surplus property. An auction is a generally accepted practice for selling surplus property at market value that complies with district policy and state law.  Another reason that the auction was held was to give members of the community who wanted to purchase a piece of Southside memorabilia an opportunity to do so.
  2. How will the proceeds of the auction be spent?
No decisions have been made. The District’s administration team and the Board are looking into several different possibilities.
  3. Have any dress codes been changed to include a ban on all items from the auction?
No change has been made to the dress code that appears on pages 30-31 of the student handbook distributed to each student at the beginning of each school year. No changes of this kind are planned.
  4. Why were some personalized items auctioned?
Some items that featured the former mascot had been personalized. These items, such as gym bags embroidered with first names, were collected at the time of the mascot transition and replaced with new items featuring the new mascot. The new items were purchased with district funds. The fact that the older items were replaced, turned in, and became part of the district’s surplus property inventory resulted in them being auctioned along with other surplus property.

Feedback from the auction also highlights the need to review written procedures related to fees, uniforms, and equipment for student groups. It is also important to verify that current practices are in alignment with those procedures. That work will continue.
