Southside students and their teacher shared the spotlight at the Arkansas State Career Development Conference March 5-6 in Little Rock when Adina Boatright, Southside DECA chapter advisor, was named Arkansas Marketing Teacher of the Year and Outstanding DECA Advisor and 92.5% of SHS students competing won finalist status. Eight students were also recognized as DECA Emerging Leaders.
Southside DECA was recognized as a gold-level chapter and earned the Achievement Level for their Membership Campaign and Thrive Level for their Community Service & Promotional Campaigns. The following students brought home awards:
First place — Holly Bissell, restaurant food service management; Jaylin Brewer, Jenny Iraheta and Emely Lopez, financial literacy promotion project; Callie Gibbs, hospitality and tourism professional selling; and Jack Johns, professional selling.
Second place — Keiyanna Fisher, Emma Marsh and David Matthews, sports and entertainment marketing operations research; Persephone Himes — franchise business plan; Stephanie Nguyen — entrepreneurship promotion project; Colby Throgmorton, principles of business management and administration; Jennifer Tipton, accounting applications; and Isabella Wright, fashion merchandising promotion plan.
Third place — Annalee Geels, Jennifer Pham and Hannah Schmidt, business services operations research; Blanca Hernandez, principles of hospitality and tourism; Loren Hernandez, Whitney Sober and Maddison Taylor, financial operations research; and Sean Sebastion, accounting applications.
Fourth place — Valerie Guiterrez and Justin Szuba, business law and ethics; Haven Haneline, personal financial literacy; Mallory Koenigseder, hotel and lodging management; Tram Nguyen, start-up business plan; Sheena Qui, accounting applications; and Cshean Smith, principles of finance.
Fifth place — Matthew Appleyard, principles of marketing, and Logan Lee, start-up business plan.
Sixth place — Jose Barroso, restaurant food service management; Nic Coluccino, innovation plan; Breann Haughey and Rowan Mitchell, buying and merchandising operations research; Nancy Mendoza, retail merchandising; and Braiden Sharum, sports and entertainment marketing.
Southside DECA is the largest DECA chapter in Arkansas at 228 members.
