It was a night for dancing at Sutton Elementary School. The school hosted its 4th annual “Dancing with Sutton Star Students,” featuring students from Kindergarten through sixth grade. Each grade performed a different dance style, including salsa, disco and square dancing. Sixth graders performed a ribbon dance routine while the younger grades took on classics such as the Macarena, the Cha Cha and the Chicken Dance.
The event, based on the popular ABC television show, “Dancing with the Stars”, ties in with the school’s physical education curriculum. Kevin Kaelin, Sutton PE Teacher and his assistant, Marge Griesse developed a unit on dance and fitness and incorporated it into the PE classes. The routines were designed to help show students that physical activity takes on many forms and that getting exercise can be fun and entertaining. “Research shows that physically active students are more successful academically,” said Peggy Roy, Sutton Elementary School Counselor. “The brain body connection is well documented.”
All students were given the opportunity to participate in the event. More than 300 attended the evening performance at the school. “We had a great turn out for our program,” said Principal Becky Plaxco. “We are so proud of our students and for the hard work that they put into learning the dances. It was a wonderful event and we appreciate all of the parents, friends, families and staff members who came out to support our students.”
