The Chaffin Junior High eighth and ninth grade team was awarded Arkansas first place honors in the annual Knowledge Master Open. The academic contest allows students to compete with schools from around the nation using the convenience of their own school computers. Each team answers questions from numerous disciplines. Points are awarded based on speed and accuracy. Calculators, books or resource materials are not allowed during the event.
The eighth and ninth grade KMO team ranked seventh out of 273 schools for the junior high division. The group also ranked second in the nation in their enrollment division, which consists of 82 schools. Team members include Gavin Clark, Josh Cormier, Eriq Deaver, Alex Easley, Alaa El Khouly, Alex Emms, Chase Green, Alexa Karber, Abby Krehbiel, Blake Larkin, Eric McLain, Bret Pinter, Tariq Salem, Faith Schrader, and Jesse Warren. The group is sponsored by Sandy Aaron.
Chaffin's KMO teams have a long history of winning, dating back to the mid-1980s. With Aaron as sponsor, the team has captured three national titles and has been ranked in the nation's top five numerous times. Because of its consistent winning record, Chaffin is considered a KMO "benchmark school" and is used as a basis of comparison for judging schools across the nation.
