Area Superintendents Offer Joint Rules on Safe Room Use
In preparation for the upcoming severe weather season, the Superintendents from Fort Smith, Alma, Greenwood and Van Buren Public Schools hosted a special presentation on February 21 regarding the use of tornado safe rooms located in each of the four districts.

Superintendents Dr. Merle Dickerson, Van Buren School District; Dr. Benny Gooden, Fort Smith Public Schools; Dr. Kay Johnson, Greenwood Public Schools; and David Woolly, Alma School District each spoke at the news conference held at the Chaffin Junior High School safe room in Fort Smith. The four administrators presented a joint set of rules, agreed upon by the area districts, that include guidelines for safe room use by schools and communities.

Also present at the conference were representatives from each of the four communities. Members of the area fire, police and emergency management forces, as well as other school district officials attended the presentation.

A complete list of the Safe Room Guidelines is posted at each location and is also available on the District website
