The annual City Choral Festival is a tradition for both the community and for Fort Smith Public Schools. Bringing together nearly 700 students, the event showcases the incredible talent of the District's award-winning choral music program and gives the community an opportunity to hear the talented groups perform together in one setting.
This year's festival was held on October 2 at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Students from Chaffin, Darby, Kimmons and Ramsey Junior High Schools and choral music students from Northside and Southside High Schools participated in a day-long rehearsal that concluded with a free public concert at the Stubblefield Center at UA-Fort Smith.
The festival first began in the 1960s when Edna Earl Massey was the choral music director at Fort Smith Senior High School. The festival continued to grow, and now includes choirs from the six secondary schools.
Guest conductors are invited each year to direct the students. The conductors work with the students during the day and then direct the evening performance. The high school portion of the evening concert was conducted by Mat Whitworth from Alma High School. Cara Sedberry from George Junior High School in Springdale conducted the junior high concert. Both have extensive backgrounds in successfully leading groups at large choral festivals.
