Students, teachers and administrators in Fort Smith are celebrating “Say Go College Week” the week of February 14-20. Northside and Southside High Schools are participating in the campaign, sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, to raise awareness for the value and importance of post-secondary education. Each school will host spirit-themed events and activities that promote attending college following graduation.
More than 300 public and private schools statewide are participating in “Say Go College” activities. The goal is to help take some of the mystery out of the college application and acceptance process, and to help students begin to realize that college attendance is possible. Students at Northside and Southside are encouraged to sign a “Say Go College” banner as a pledge that they plan to attend some type of post-secondary institution. Special daily announcements about college are also being made to provide students with important facts and updates about the college application process.
Throughout the week, teachers will wear buttons that read “Ask Me About College.” Teachers have also been encouraged to include the topic of attending college into their class discussions and writing prompts. The week will culminate with “College Goal Sunday” at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Students will have the opportunity to receive assistance in filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which is required to qualify for grants and scholarship assistance.
