Three sixth-graders from Fort Smith Public Schools took home the top honors at the 2011 Sebastian County Spelling Bee. Celeste Del Rio from Howard Elementary was named the county's top speller. Huy Mai, Fairview Elementary, was first runner-up and Tyler Traylor, Cavanaugh Elementary, placed third.
Thirty-eight students from grades fourth through eighth competed in the bee. In the fourteenth round, Del Rio correctly spelled the word “colloquial” making her the champion. She will represent Sebastian County at the state spelling bee in Little Rock on March 12.
The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, which hosted this year’s bee, awarded Del Rio a $2,000 scholarship voucher for placing first. Mai received a $500 voucher and Traylor was given a $250 scholarship for taking third place. Event sponsor BancorpSouth also presented the top three with savings accounts ranging from $25 to $100.
