"Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves" Author Visits Pike Elementary

Students at Pike Elementary School were treated to an afternoon with award-winning children’s author Vaunda Nelson. Nelson, who is famous for books such as Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marshal and Juneteenth, spoke to the students about her life, her books and the history behind the legend of Bass Reeves. She shared about how experiences throughout her childhood had influenced her writing and how she became interested in writing about Bass Reeves and other figures. Nelson also took time to answer questions and to show of some her treasured collectibles, including historical badges and replica handcuffs. Pike parents and family members were also invited to hear Nelson speak at an evening presentation held in the school cafeteria. 



School Board meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Service Center Auditorium, located in Building B of the Service Center Complex, 3205 Jenny Lind Road. The meetings are open to the public.
