Shipley and Davis Win InvestWrite Competitions

Chaffin Junior High students, Cara Shipley and Olivia Davis, were recently recognized as the InvestWrite essay contest winners for the 2012-2013 competitions. Shipley won the 2012 fall competition and Davis won the 2013 spring competition. Both students researched many aspects of economics while learning the skills to prepare for their own financial future. Shipley and Davis were under the supervision of Greg Crawford, Economics teacher.

The contest involves students monitoring, “daily global market activity and economic factors that drive investments to determine the short and long-term growth potential of industries, companies, asset classes and specific stocks, bonds and mutual funds,” according to Melanie Mortimer, Executive Director of the SIFMA Foundation. “They are then asked to make sophisticated, thoughtful recommendations that reflect what is expected of college and career-ready students.” The InvestWrite essay competition is a component of the Stock Market Game that is provided by Economics Arkansas. It occurs at the ten-week period of investment and challenges students to analyze an investment scenario along with writing an essay offering investment advice.
