Four Fort Smith Public Schools graduates were honored as 2012-2013 Outstanding WATC Students. Southside students Trey Cooksey and Khanhny Patoumma, were presented with the Outstanding Pre-Engineering Student and Outstanding Early Childhood Education Student Awards, respectively. Perla Rodriguez and Benjamin Truong, Northside, were named Outstanding General Health Student and Outstanding Advanced Health Student.
Coordinated by the University of Arkansas—Fort Smith, WATC (Western Arkansas Technical Center), provides area juniors and seniors with the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. WATC is an extension of the high school curriculum and offers students hands-on training in technical fields.
Outstanding WATC students are selected by the faculty in each program area. In order to be nominated for the awards, students must have a minium 3.00 cumulative UAFS grade point average; have a minimum of one completed semester; and must have senior status at their high school. Students must also be enrolled in the program for which they are nominated, be in good standing academically with WATC and demonstrate good character and a strong work ethic. All outstanding students are awarded a $500 book scholarship for use at the UAFS.
