In 1989, Waldo Fisher, a Civics teacher at Darby, started a program where students decorated the Fort Smith National Cemetery for Memorial Day. Over the past 25 years, Darby students have taken great pride in performing this honor. With the help of numerous organizations including the Vietnam Veterans of America—Chapter 467, Arvest Bank, and Goody's Frozen Yogurt, this project continues with great success. Even though Mr. Fisher has retired, the students of Darby Junior High School carry on this tradition. Darby students place over 13,000 flags at the National Cemetery each year.
For a student to be selected, they have to be nominated as one of the top 25 students in 7th Grade Social Studies, 8th Grade World History, or 9th Grade Civics/Econ classes.
Darby Junior High School would like to recognize Mr. Presson, Mr. Black, Mr. Fiehl, Mr. Burns, & Mr. D. Smith for their support and help with this project.
