The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Chancellor’s Office is a partner to the Fort Smith Adult Education Center.  Chancellor Paul Beran and his wife Janice Beran have a long history in Adult Education, and they are huge supporters of our efforts.

Janice Beran serves on our WAGE/Adult Education Advisory Board and provides valuable input and collaboration. Her background as a program administrator in Texas gave her a real passion for Adult Education.

The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith provides their amazing Stubblefield Center each year to host our graduation ceremony.  They also provide scholarships to our top GED scorers.  They provide tours for our students, and even host special events for our students.  Laura Freeman and Candace Lookado from admissions also serve on our WAGE/Advisory Board, as does Pat Eller, Director of the Center for Business and Professional Development at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. Laura and Candace work directly with our students, helping them apply move into post-secondary training after leaving adult education.

Thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Beran and the staff of the Chancellor’s Office for their excellent partnership with Fort Smith Adult Education.

The Fort Smith Adult Education Center partnered with UAFS January 12, 2012, for the Adult Education students to attend free men’s and women’s basketball games with St. Edward’s of Austin, Texas at Stubblefield Center.  Laura Freeman and Candace Lookadoo worked with UAFS Assistant Athletic Director Beth Presley for tickets. Marcia Dye coordinated the event for the Adult Education Center.  The students were allowed to ask for as many tickets as they needed so that their family members could also attend the games.  The event was so popular that over 160 people were in attendance for Adult Education night.  These were the first college basketball games for many of the students to see.  The Fort Smith Adult Education Center’s student body’s diverse population spans a variety of cultures and educational levels.   Many of the students who attended the games are TAA students who are laid off from their jobs and are improving their basic skills before moving on to UAFS or other educational institutions for higher degrees. Getting these students on the UAFS campus has been a primary goal for this outstanding partnership. Earlier projects this school year have included highly successful student tours and College Preview Night.   More events and activities are in the planning process for the spring.   In addition, the Adult Education Center partners with the UAFS Chancellor’s Office for GED graduation which is scheduled for May 7 at the Stubblefield Center.
