District Elementary Literacy Coordinator

The Elementary Literacy Coordinator will provide adequate time, resources, and support for K-6 teachers, K-6 Interventionists, and Literacy Instructional Facilitators to apply research based instructional practices, integration of high yield strategies, and the implementation of Arkansas English Language Proficiency State Standards. The Elementary Literacy Coordinator will monitor and provide assistance in the analysis of student data designed to drive classroom instruction toward increased student achievement.

Elementary Literacy

The elementary literacy efforts, initiatives, and programs are focused on nurturing student growth in the areas of reading and writing, while also ensuring that quality instruction is offered in the grade level skills specified in the Arkansas Language Proficiency State Standards for grades K-6. Elementary reading efforts target improving phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency with such initiatives as implementation of Comprehensive Literacy. Literacy Instructional Facilitators support teachers in the identification and implementation of research-based, best practices through professional development, research, modeling, and committee work. K-2 Interventionist and Reading Recovery teachers provide an additional tier of intervention for struggling readers and writers in kindergarten through second grade.  Struggling third through sixth grade students are supported through short–term, skills-based small groups by Interventionists.

Elementary Literacy Task Force 

Task Force Mission Statement: The Literacy Task Force will set the direction and focus of literacy instruction and assessment for the development and empowerment of lifelong readers and writers.

This is a committee comprised of elementary teachers, principals, K-6 Interventionists, and Literacy Instructional Facilitators on all grade levels who meet to address literacy issues.  Each of the nineteen elementary campuses is represented on this committee. This group of dedicated educators undertakes the scheduling of The Learning Institute reading and writing assessments, the alignment of curriculum with these assessments, the discussion of issues that face our students and teachers, and the dissemination of program and strategy information to ensure the success of all of our students.

Secondary Literacy

 

District Literacy Coordinator

The Secondary Literacy Coordinator for the Fort Smith Public School District will provide adequate time, resources, and support for grades 7-12 teachers to apply research based instructional practices, integration of high yield strategies, and the implementation of The Arkansas ELA Standards. The Secondary Literacy Coordinator will provide assistance in the analysis of student data designed to drive classroom instruction toward increased student achievement.  Finally, the Secondary Literacy Coordinator will monitor the implementation of research based instructional practices, integration of The Arkansas ELA Standards literacy proficiency scores of Fort Smith Public School students in secondary schools.

 

Secondary Literacy 

The secondary literacy efforts, initiatives, and programs are focused on nurturing student growth in the areas of reading and writing, while also ensuring that quality instruction is offered in the grade level skills specified in the Common Core State Standards. Secondary literacy efforts target effective implementation of the ELA Common Core Standards in all disciplines to promote authentic literacy skills needed for the twenty-first century. The secondary literacy coordinator and facilitators support teachers in identifying and implementing research-based, best practices through professional development,  research, modeling, and collaborative work.
