Elementary Mathematics

The elementary efforts, initiatives, and programs are focused on student growth based on the Arkansas State Standards in Mathematics.  In the classroom, students experience quality instruction that balances acquisition of basic skills with problem solving and application of mathematical procedures with understanding. The Arkansas State Standards and Mathematical Practices for K-6 provide the foundational standards for the Fort Smith Public Schools curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Each lesson and assessment is designed to align to the grade-level learning expectations and goals set forth within the document. Teachers work on the premise that all students can become mathematically literate. Math Instructional Facilitators support elementary teachers in the identification and implementation of research-based, best practices through professional development, research, modeling, and collaborative work. In order to achieve our goal of building number sense and fluency, Number Talks will be an integral part of ALL elementary math instruction.  Number Talks are classroom conversations around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally.

Secondary Mathematics

Fort Smith Public Schools believe our students will have a strong preparation in secondary mathematics which is essential for preparing them for future success.  Our students must learn to reason and make sense of mathematics, so they are able to use those skills in meaningful ways. Students today need to develop critical thinking skills to succeed in a post-secondary education and in life.  The districts’ effort, initiatives, and programs are focused on student growth.
