COURSE DESCRIPTIONS AND PREREQUISITES

Keyboarding--7th grade, 1 semester—This course is designed to help students develop speed and accuracy by learning the touch operation of alphanumeric/keyboard characters. Emphasis is placed on the following: mastery of the keyboard with desirable keyboarding techniques; development of speed and accuracy; basic problem-solving application of centering and arranging reports, letters, and tables; proofreading; formatting; and proper care of the equipment. Keyboarding is a foundation for developing entry-level skills for business careers.

Prerequisite: No prerequisite is required for this beginning course.

Keyboarding Connections--While improving keyboarding skills, students will improve their writing and literacy skills by composing and typing business documents such as letters and memos. Students will compose and type reports and will be introduced to basic word processing skills. This class is designed to help prepare students for the state benchmark test as students will compose their own response to written work and learn to organize their thoughts by using graphic organizers.

Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed one semester of Keyboarding.

Computer Technology—8th grade, 1 semester—Computer Technology is a one-semester course designed to prepare students with an introduction to business applications, which are necessary to live and work in a technological society. Emphasis is given to hardware, concepts, and business uses of applications. The business applications covered are word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, integrated software, electronic mail, management-support software and image processing.

Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed one semester of Keyboarding.

Computer Applications I & II—9th grade, 1 semester each—Computer Application classes are self-paced and competency based. Self-paced means the students are responsible for their own progression in the class while competency based indicates students have to make 80% or better on tests to be qualified as skilled in order to move on to the next unit. It is recommended that the student be in pre-AP classes.

Prerequisite: Students must have successfully completed one semester of Keyboarding. Students receive one-half credit toward graduation requirements.

Computerized Business Applications—9th grade, 1 full year—Computerized Business Applications is a two-semester course designed to prepare students with an introduction to business applications that are necessary to live and work in a technological society. Emphasis is given to hardware, concepts, and business uses of applications. The business applications covered are word processing, database, spreadsheet, telecommunications, presentation, and Web page design. Students receive 1 credit toward graduation requirements.
