In 1990, Waldo Fisher, a Civics teacher at Darby, started a program where students decorated the Fort Smith National Cemetery for Memorial Day.  Over the past 20 years, Darby students have taken great pride in performing this honor.  With the help of numerous organizations including the Vietnam Veterans of America—Chapter 467, this project continues with great success.  Even though Mr. Fisher has retired, the students of Darby Junior High School carry on this tradition. 

For a student to be selected, they have to be nominated as one of the top 25 students in 7th Grade Social Studies, 8th grade US History, and 9th Grade Civics classes.
