Parker Center - English Language Acquisition
English Language Acquisition
The Title III English Language Acquisition (ELA) program targets children and adults who do not speak English as a primary language. The goal is for non-English speaking students to learn English as quickly as possible so they can function in all English curricula. Teachers and paraprofessionals in the ELA program also work with students to prevent them from falling behind in basic content areas. Professional development is provided for school staff to support the teaching of English Language Learners (ELL).
Migrant
The Migrant Education program targets migrant children and provides funding to hire certified and paraprofessional staff to help assist these students in any area of need. In Fort Smith, the Migrant program is an extension of the English Language Acquisition program. Additional services provided by the Migrant program include health services, correspondence courses, and the Reading Is Fundamental© program.
Indian Education
The Title VII Indian Education program supports academic and cultural needs of American Indian students. The program includes a certified teacher and paraprofessionals who tutor in basic subject areas in targeted elementary schools and rewards American Indian children for achievement. The Indian Education program sponsors cultural presentations which expose all students to the various American Indian cultures.
