Elementary Literacy
The elementary literacy efforts, initiatives, and programs are focused on nurturing student growth in the areas of reading and writing, while also ensuring that quality instruction is offered in the grade level skills specified in the Arkansas Department of Education’s Frameworks. Elementary reading efforts target improving phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency with such initiatives as the Partnership in Comprehensive Literacy with UALR and participation in the Arkansas Reading First Program. Literacy Coaching supports teachers for the identification and implementation of research-based, best practices through professional development, research, modeling, and committee work. Reading Recovery provides an additional tier of intervention for struggling readers and writers.

Elementary Literacy Task Force
Mission Statement: The Literacy Task Force will set the direction and focus of literacy instruction and assessment for the development and empowerment of lifelong readers and writers.

This is a committee comprised of elementary teachers and literacy coaches on all grade levels who meet to address literacy issues. Each of the nineteen elementary campuses is represented on this committee by at least two teachers. This group of dedicated educators undertakes the scheduling of The Learning Institute reading and writing assessments, the alignment of curriculum with these assessments, the discussion of issues that face our students and teachers, and the dissemination of program and strategy information to ensure the success of all of our students.

Secondary Literacy
The secondary literacy efforts, initiatives, and programs are focused on nurturing student growth in the areas of reading and writing, while also ensuring that quality instruction is offered in the grade level skills specified in the Arkansas Department of Education’s Frameworks. Secondary reading efforts target improving comprehension and fluency with such initiatives as the creation of literacy labs in the junior high school setting. Additionally, the nationally recognized reader’s workshop model is used in secondary schools throughout the district. Writing initiatives are based upon the writer’s workshop model and also include work with the Northwest Arkansas branch of the National Writing Project. Support for the identification and implementation of all such research-based, best practices is offered through professional development, research, modeling, and committee work.
