Cheerleaders

Purpose

To promote school spirit at Southside athletic events, to set the example for good sportsmanship and conduct, to encourage scholarship, and to act as representatives of Southside High School at in town and out of town events.

Requirements

Meet all Arkansas Activities Association eligibility requirements. Be able to attend and participate in all practices, athletic events, and fund raisers. In order to tryout for Cheerleader a candidate must be a member in good standing of the SHS Drill Team, Pep Club or Band.

Columbians Service Club

Purpose

Columbians is the oldest club at Southside. Columbians is a 'service club that does projects to serve the students of Southside and community organizations. Students work at the "Angel Tree" during Christmas, visit local hospitals on special days, and hold fund raising projects to raise money for needy organizations.

Purpose

To promote school spirit and loyalty; to perform at school or special events; to set an example of good sportsmanship and conduct; to act as a representative of Southside High School.

Requirements

Try-outs are held in March each year. In order to try out for the Drill Team a candidate must be a member in good standing of the Band, Pep Club, or Cheerleaders. Be able to participate in all Dixie Belle practices, performances, and fund raising activities.

Earth Club

Purpose

The purpose of Southside's Earth Club is to provide students with an opportunity to meet, share ideas, and generate an interest in environmental conservation. Earth Club members will devlop conservation projects and programs in the school and community and will endeavor to bring attention to local, regional, as well as global, environmental concerns.

Any Southside student with a respect for the environment and the desire to contribute his or her time and energy to conservation is encouraged to become a part of Earth Club.

Future Business Leaders of America
(FBLA)

Purpose

To provide worthwhile activities to assist students in leadership development as they prepare to be tomorrow's business leaders. FBLA service projects include the American Red Cross, Arkansas Children's Hospital, and the March of Dimes. FBLA students also attend leadership conferences and students compete in business events on the District, State, and National level.

Interest in business endeavors. A $9.00 membership fee is paid to the State and National offices.

Interact Service Club

Purpose

To provide needed services to both Southside and the Fort Smith community. Interact operates the 'canteen before and after school; sponsors a Christmas reception for the faculty and foreign exchange students; participates in the Adopt a Highway program; directs the Pet Food Drive for the Humane Society; works with the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Christmas project; and other miscellaneous service projects.

Junior Council

Purpose

To represent the Junior Class in school activities and events; to organize money -making projects to raise money for their Senior Prom and other activities. The Junior Council designs and sells Junior Class shirts.

Key Club

Purpose

The Key Club is a service club that provides service to Southside and the community. Club members visit the nursing homes monthly; visit and interact with kids at the Lincoln Day Care Center; escort Special Education students to the Arkansas-Oklahoma Fair; sponsor the annual canned food drive for the Salvation Army; raise money for the Arkansas Children's Hospital; host dances for Special Education students, and support school activities.

Martial Arts Club

Purpose

The purpose of the Martial Arts Club is to educate members about the philosophy and traditions of various styles of martial arts and to teach basic self-defense.

Requirements

Any student may join the martial arts club. Prior knowledge or experience in martial arts is not required. Students who wish to join are required to have a signed permission form from a parent or guardian. Each student must also sign an agreement to be responsible with the knowledge they gain.

Mock Trial Club

Purpose

To give students the experience of what it is like to take part in the legal system, as Attorneys and witnesses. We accomplish this by developing a case based off of materials provided by the Bar Association and going to trial against another school.

Partners Club

Purpose

To provide leadership training and support for the Special Olympic athletes. By attending training sessions, these partners will be more prepared to understand and work with people who are mentally or physically challenged. Partners accompany the athletes to Special Oympic events and work with them to prepare for the events.

Interest in helping others and agree to work a prescribed number of hours. Members must have their parents' permission to participate.
