Student Athletics and Activities

The interscholastic athletic and activities program in the Fort Smith Public School District functions as an integral part of the total school curriculum. Athletics, music, and spirit groups support the academic mission of the schools.

The secondary school competitive athletics program provides a variety of sports that meet the needs and interests of junior and senior high school students. These include football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, golf, swimming, track, cross-country, bowling and gymnastics.

The music programs encourage students interested in music to develop instrumental and vocal skills in a band, orchestra and choral music environments. Music students learn the value of personal skill and talent in relation to excellence as a performance group.

Cheerleader and drill team organizations promote and uphold school spirit and loyalty. They guide the student body in developing a strong sense of good sportsmanship and they help to build better relationships between schools during athletic events.

All offer students the opportunity to serve the school and develop personal and team talent and skill. These sports and activities also build relationships and goodwill, and they promote physical, mental and emotional growth while encouraging good citizenship.

Participation in an athletic program or activity is a privilege and not a right. It is afforded to those individuals who possess the ability, attitude, disposition, cooperative spirit, and desire to represent their school and community in a positive manner. All require a high standard and expectation of solid performance in the area of academics, citizenship, rules and sportsmanship.

The Fort Smith Public School District is a member of the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA). This association establishes rules, guidelines, and regulations for all AAA sanctioned sports activities and is the governing body of all participating secondary schools in Arkansas.
