Woods Elementary School

Greetings from the Principal, Diane Issacs!
Welcome to Woods Elementary School and our thirty-ninth year of serving the families of Fort Smith. We are proud of our heritage and look forward to the future. Woods Elementary has smart students, excellent teachers, interested staff, involved parents, and a caring atmosphere. We are committed to our mission statement:

Woods School - A safe place where we work, think, and learn together for success in tomorrow's world.

Our themes for the 2014-2015 school year are:

Make Every Day Count and
H.A.P.P.Y. (Have A Positive, Productive Year)

It's an exciting time at Woods Elementary! We are excited to announce our renovations and new additions to Woods Elementary are all complete! We invite you to visit and see our beautiful school, complete with a fantastic media center, expanded office area, and nine new classrooms! In addition to our new classrooms, all existing classrooms were remodeled with new bookshelves and carpet. We know you will be just as proud as we are of all of the changes being put in place for our students and staff.

Also complete is our new expanded drive, which will help to eliminate traffic congestion between Woods Elementary and Chaffin Junior High. There is now a two car entrance as well as a turnaround (loop) area for student pick up. Bus parking will now
be on the side.

We also have two new themes this year. They are: Make Every Day Count and H.A.P.P.Y. (Have A Positive, Productive, Year). Our two themes work well together because if everyone Makes Ever Day Count then we will Have A Positive, Productive Year!

Why the new themes? Make Every Day Count emphasizes the importance of daily attendance for our students. Last year, our attendance rate was 95.72%. This year, our goal is to reach 97% of students attending school each and every day. Students who miss 10%, or 18 days or more, of school for any reason are academically at risk!  Frequent absenteeism results in

a higher percentage of students who drop out of school.

Think of absences in terms of a stop light. Red indicates chronic absences –18 or more days, yellow indicates a warning – 10 to 17 days, and green indicates satisfactory – 9 or fewer days.

If we all work together to increase student attendant, we will succeed in “Making Every Day Count!”
