Celebrating Military Families at the FSPS Purple Up Picnic
On April 18, Fort Smith Public Schools hosted its annual "Purple Up" Picnic, celebrating military students and their families. The event brought together military families, district staff, and community members for an evening of connection and appreciation.
April is recognized nationwide as the Month of the Military Child, established by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1986 to honor the resilience and sacrifices of military-connected children. The picnic offered families a chance to connect with educators and each other, strengthening bonds within the school community.
Fort Chaffee Post Commander Colonel David Gibbons served as the guest speaker, sharing heartfelt gratitude for the families’ strength and service. He acknowledged the unique challenges military children face, including frequent relocations and extended separations from their parents.
With over 14,000 Arkansans in the U.S. Armed Forces and more than 5,200 military children enrolled in Arkansas public schools, FSPS remains dedicated to supporting these families. As a Purple Star District, FSPS underscores its commitment to military-connected students.
