Two FSPS Schools Recognized by State for Performance, Growth

Fort Smith, AR - Fort Smith Public Schools is pleased to announce that Woods Elementary School and Cavanaugh Elementary School received state recognition for performance and growth. The Arkansas Department of Education’s Division of Elementary and Secondary Education released the list of Reward Schools today. Woods is recognized for being in the Top 6-10 Percent Performance category, with Cavanaugh in the Top 6-10 Percent Growth category.

“I am extremely proud of the outstanding work from educators and staff at both schools,” Superintendent Martin Mahan said. “The awards recognize their commitment to excellence and dedication to their students.”

As a result of achieving the Reward School designation, Woods Elementary will receive $23,025.42, and Cavanaugh will receive $13,074.65.

District Letter Grade

In addition to recognizing Reward Schools today, DESE released letter grades for each district. This is the first time the state has provided letter grades on the district level. Previously, letter grades were only assigned to schools.

The department also implemented a new accountability system earlier this year, which resulted in revised letter grade calculations. In today’s report, FSPS received a C.

“The letter grades provide insight into areas of achievement, as well as areas that need improvement; however, the grades do not define the hard work of our students, educators, and staff,” Mahan said. “We will thoroughly review the new information provided today and use the data to reflect, refine, and strengthen our efforts to ensure students graduate high school prepared for enrollment, enlistment, and employment.”
