Pathways to Arkansas Teacher Licensure

In Arkansas, obtaining a teaching license is a straightforward process with multiple pathways for aspiring educators. Below is an overview of how you can get started:

Traditional Licensure


  • Earn a degree in education from an accredited university.
  • Complete student teaching as part of your program.
  • Pass the required Praxis exams.
  • Apply for licensure through the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Alternative Licensure


  • Licensure Pathways for Individuals with a Bachelor’s Degree or Higher.
  • These pathways often allow you to work as teacher of record in a school district while meeting licensure requirements. 
  • Pass the required Praxis exams.
