Welcome New Students
Enrolling in school is an important milestone for every child's educational journey, and we are excited to welcome new members to our school community. This pivotal step marks the beginning of a lifetime of learning, growth, and development. At Fort Smith Public Schools, we understand the significance of this moment and are dedicated to providing a nurturing and supportive environment where each child can thrive.
Parents or guardians of any child between the ages of five (by August 1) and seventeen are required to enroll their child in a public, private, parochial, or home school. Students may enter kindergarten if they turn five years old on or before August 1 of the year they seek initial enrollment (ACA 6-18-207).
Kindergarten attendance is mandatory for all Arkansas students unless parents request a waiver through the Department of Student Services.

Accurate and timely registration information is crucial for our district to make informed staffing decisions. The Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) sets class-size standards that limit the number of children per classroom based on grade level:
- Preschool and Kindergarten: Maximum of 20 students per classroom.
- Grades 1-3: Maximum of 25 students per classroom.
- Grades 4-6: Maximum of 28 students per classroom.
We ask that you promptly and accurately complete the registration process. Decisions about student placement will be made as soon as possible and are based on seat availability.
For students displaced from their home school due to over-enrollment, district transportation will be provided.

Privacy of School Records
Fort Smith Public Schools maintains three types of confidential student records: academic progress, health and attendance reports, and individual test results. Each principal is responsible for managing the records for their school. If parents wish to review their child’s records, they can request access through the principal, who can provide copies of the district's policy on record privacy.
