School Nurses

Supporting Student Health & Wellness

At Fort Smith Public Schools, our nurses are vital members of the school community who support the health and well-being of every student. Each campus is staffed with a licensed nurse who provides daily care, manages medications, conducts health screenings, and responds to medical needs as they arise. Our nurses also serve as a trusted link between school, home, and healthcare providers. Through collaboration with families, staff, and community partners, the health services team helps ensure that students are healthy, supported, and ready to learn each day.

Health Screenings

Scoliosis

Scoliosis screenings are conducted for female students in grades 6 and 8, and for male students in grade 8. Parents will be notified before the screening takes place and may opt out in writing. If a student does not pass the screening, parents will be informed.

Additional screenings may be provided based on referrals. If a student does not pass, parents will be notified and must follow up with a licensed specialist within 60 days of the screening report.

BMI

In accordance with Arkansas Act 1220 of 2003, Fort Smith Public Schools conducts Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings for students in grades 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 to help monitor statewide health trends. Height and weight are measured privately using digital equipment, and results are submitted to the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement for BMI calculation. Individual results are not included on report cards but are available to parents upon request.
