You may have noticed that many of the construction projects happening at Fort Smith Public Schools’ campuses are well underway and appear to be nearing completion. Progress on these buildings continues to be on time and on budget. Plans are to open the Freshman Centers at Northside and Southside, as well as the Peak Innovation Center, at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. This work is a direct result of your support and the support of voters in Fort Smith and Barling when the Vision 2023 Capital Improvements Program was approved in May 2018.
The Fort Smith Public Schools’ Vision 2023 Strategic Plan has allowed teachers, students, parents and district and community leaders to reimagine and “renovate” the way that education is delivered in our area. This includes grade reconfiguration at all schools for the 2021-2022 school year.
There are many details to share as we begin the process of transitioning ninth graders to Freshman Centers at the high schools and transitioning sixth grade students to Chaffin, Darby, Kimmons and Ramsey Middle Schools.
This Fall, this means that current fifth graders will move to middle schools with their sixth grade classmates, and current eighth graders will move to the Freshman Centers as their ninth grade classmates enter their 10th Grade Year at the high schools.
At this time, the district is working with teachers and school administrators to staff the new centers and shift some district educators to sixth and ninth grade teaching positions that will be located on different campuses.
FSPS teachers who meet licensing requirements for either of these grade levels may apply for the positions in new buildings first. Because of state class-size and other academic standards, it may be necessary to move some teachers to schools where the student population requires more staff. When open positions have been filled by current staff, teachers and support staff outside the district may apply for any remaining open positions.
One high profile change that will occur with these transitions is ninth-grade athletics. Ninth-grade football, basketball and volleyball teams will move with the students to the high schools. Two teams in each of these sports will replace what has been ninth-grade teams at Chaffin, Darby, Kimmons and Ramsey. Ninth graders who participate in other AAA sports will continue to participate with the high schools, as they have done for many years.
Coaches who are selected to move with ninth grade teams often have core course instruction assignments in addition to their coaching responsibilities, and will make up a portion of the core teaching schedule. Band, Choir and Orchestra teachers who work with student musicians throughout the school day, and often support their colleagues in feeder secondary schools, will not experience any permanent move in location at this time. With regard to sixth grade opportunities, it is possible that FSPS will be able to offer athletics and music instruction to sixth grade students in the future. This will require additional research and planning in the coming years.
School teams, counselors and career education facilitators are already working with eighth and ninth graders. They are helping students to plan for new academic opportunities that will be available because of this transition. Fifth and sixth graders will begin to see additional information regarding the shift to a middle school building in Fall 2021. Parents, look for details on information sessions at the middle schools as well as registration opportunities this Spring. Please do not hesitate to ask your child’s principal for more information on these big moves that are planned for Fall 2021.
There is no doubt that all schools will be a little different because of the new grade configurations in each building. There is also no doubt that by working together, we can ensure the best academic and personal opportunities for all students with this transition.
