FSPS Makes Administrative Appointments
In a regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, December 14, Fort Smith Public Schools appointed two of its own to administrative positions within the district. Martin Mahan was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Fort Smith Public Schools and Sonia Guerrero was appointed Principal of Tilles Elementary School.
Martin Mahan, Deputy Superintendent
Martin Mahan, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction has been named Deputy Superintendent of Fort Smith Public Schools. Mahan has served as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in Fort Smith Schools since July 2019, and has worked in public education for almost 30 years.
During his tenure with the Fort Smith Public Schools, Mahan has held a variety of roles including Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Campus Support, Executive Director of Human Resources, Director of Secondary Education, Principal at Northside High School, Principal at Kimmons Junior High, Assistant Principal at Darby Junior High, and Social Worker/Counselor and Instructor at Belle Point Alternative Center.
In Fort Smith, he has been part of the Closing the Achievement Gap Committee, District Technology Applications Committee, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Program, the development of the Peak Innovation Center, the development of the Health Sciences Academy, the development of the FSPS K-12 Virtual Option, and other initiatives. Mahan created and leads the Aspiring Leaders’ Institute.
In addition to his administrative work, Mahan is a member of the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators and he is Chairman of the Board of the Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science.
Mahan holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Henderson State University and a Master of Science in Education from the University of Arkansas. He also holds an Educational Specialist degree from Arkansas Tech University.
“Mr. Mahan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role. He is Fort Smith Public Schools proud and I am honored to serve with him as he enters this new role with the district,” said Dr. Morawski, incoming superintendent.

Sonia Guerrero, Tilles Elementary School Principal
Sonia Guerrero, Ballman Elementary School 5th and 6th Grade Math and Science teacher, has been named the new principal of Tilles Elementary School. Ms. Guerrero’s appointment as principal comes as Tilles principal Regina Thompson announces her retirement, effective at the end of the Fall 2020 semester.
As a professional educator with more than 20 years experience in the classroom, Ms. Guerrero has served in many educator roles including elementary school teacher, assistant principal, campus testing coordinator, and middle school teacher. From the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, Ms. Guerrero holds a B.S. in Marketing and a M.A. in Education.
“We are delighted to have been able to hire from within for this campus leadership position. Ms. Guerrero has proven herself to be a capable leader and champion for students, and we are pleased to welcome her into this new role at Tilles Elementary School,” said Dr. Mary Ann Johns, Director of Elementary Education, Fort Smith Public Schools.
