Superintendent Stars are selected for this recognition as students who are exceptional citizens and who consistently make good choices.
Jean Carlos Armijo Rubio is the son of Wendy Armijo and Angel Perez. He is a fifth grader. Sutton Principal Jennie Mathews says that Jean Carlos is a hard worker and a fabulous role model for others. He volunteers his mornings before school. He serves in the Flag Patrol Team and has a great attitude and helpful spirit. He shines each and every day at Sutton! We are proud of you, Jean Carlos!
Olivia Boren is a student at Carnall. She in the second grade and was selected by Principal Dr. Taneka Tate who says that Olivia is an honest and dependable student who can be counted on to do the right thing. She keeps her group organized and on task, and helps with assignments as needed. She sets the standard for Carnall COLT expectations! Keep leading the way, Olivia!
Adrienne Castillo is the daughter of Esther and Juan Castillo. She is a third grader at Bonneville. Principal Sharla Whitson says that Adrienne is a student who goes above and beyond in the classroom every single day. She has a positive attitude and willingness to help others without being asked. Adrienne tries her best to tackle every single obstacle in her way, she never gives up, and she stays positive at all times.
Brianna Hicks is a sixth student at Howard Elementary School and is the daughter of Brian Hicks. Principal Velmar Greene nominated Brianna because she is such a positive force in class, and a caring friend to her classmates. Her beautiful smile and friendly nature are comforting. Brianna is a high-ranking officer on our patrol team, and is respected by every person associated with our school. Great job, Brianna!
Mohammad Mahdi Al Huneiti is in kindergarten at Cook Elementary. According to Principal Dr. Courtney Morawski, Mohammad has been in the U.S. for only eight months, and has not allowed the language barrier to stand in the way of his success. He has made friends quickly, and shows solid progress of his language skills through reading and math scores. Mohammad is a hard worker. Congrats, Mohammad!
Vanessa Mendez is in the second grade. She was nominated by Morrison Principal Britney Ballin because she is a perfect example of Morrison's mission to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind. She is respectful to teachers, students, and herself. This year alone, her reading scores have improved by six levels. Vanessa is confident and able to share to help classmates. Morrison is so thankful to see Vanessa blossom this year. We are very proud of you Vanessa!
Santos Pacheco is the son of Santiago and Rosa Pacheco and is a sixth grader. Principal Robyn Dawson nominated Santos because as he has grown through the years so have his leadership skills! He is a positive role model and friend to other students. He recognizes a need and offers to help, takes on leadership responsibilities, and utilizes his opportunities to learn. Santos is just an all around great student at Spradling Elementary!
Isley Spencer is in kindergarten at Woods Elementary. Principal Andrea Schwartz nominated Isley because she has demonstrated leadership with a compassionate heart. Isley shows empathy to others who are having a hard time. She comforts them and often gives up her play time to help her friends through times of need. Isley has a heart of gold and she makes her classroom and school a better place. Thank you, Isley!
Timmy Tran is currently as a sixth grader at Trusty Elementary. Principal Dr. Shantelle Edwards says that Timmy works hard and is on the Principal’s Honor Roll. He serves the school in other ways: he is a member of Flag Patrol, a Technology Assistant for Tiger Pride Time, a Fire Marshal, and a Golden Knight. He volunteers to help teachers before school and is always willing to help explain things to his classmates!
Raequan Whitaker is the son of Starla Minor and Reginald Whitaker. He was nominated by Euper Lane Principal Gina Mann because Raequan has become a focused student and demonstrates to his peers how to make good choices, be honest, and model a caring attitude. He is a very intelligent young man making good grades as a result of his choices to focus in the classroom. Go, Eagles!
Student Recognitions
- Southside High School sophomore, Jackson Minnick, won the Arkansas state oratorical contest in the American Legion competition. This win qualified him to compete nationally in Indianapolis.
- Cesar Venegas won the gold medal in the Job Interview category at the SkillsUSA competition in Hot Springs. SkillsUSA is the competitive branch of the Career and Technology Education program. In this particular category, students practice with a specific set of questions that allow them refine their interview skills. As a Gold Medalists, Cesar qualifies to compete in the national contest in Louisville, KY.
National History Day
- Patsy Graham, Madison Nixon, Layla Randels and Jaxon Waite of Barling Elementary won first place in the Junior Group Documentary division in National History Day State Competition. This win qualifies these students to compete at the national level in Washington, D.C. on June 8-13. Jennifer Shure and Theresa Johnson are the advisors for the group, and Jennifer Shure was also named as the region’s Novice Teacher of the Year.
Future Business Leaders
- With 262 members, Southside Future Business Leaders of America continues as Arkansas’ largest chapter and the tenth largest chapter in the nation. Southside received the Holly & Kitty Guy Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit, the National Outstanding Chapter Award, the National Chapter Challenge Awards and the National Membership Achievement Award. Kelley Todd is the chapter’s advisor.

Staff Recognitions
Dr. Tony Jones
Tony Jones was recognized last fall for his selection as the Belle Point Center: A New Tech Academy instructional leader. We now get to applaud his hard work that has resulted in a completed doctorate in Educational Leadership from Arkansas Tech. Dr. Jones is a home-grown success story. He attended Spradling Elementary, Kimmons Junior High and Northside High School. He began his teaching career at Northside where he taught for five years. He served as an assistant principal at Kimmons and Northside before his selection as Belle Point director.
Dr. Amy Manley
Amy Manley joined the Fort Smith Public Schools in 1999 as the Kimmons Junior High School Director of Bands until she was selected to serve as the Assistant Principal at Darby Junior High in 2012. She was selected as the Ramsey Junior High School Principal in 2016. She has a bachelor and master degrees from Arkansas Tech University, and a Specialist in Educational Administration from Arkansas State University. She has officially completed requirements for a doctorate in Educational Leadership from from Arkansas Tech University. Dr. Manley is married to Gordon Manley, Director of Bands at Northside High School.
