Students Soar with STEAM
Full STEAM Ahead, though only in its first year, was one of the most popular summer enrichment opportunities offered by FSPS. Between the two weeks the camp was offered, 270 students in grades three through six attended the camp. Full STEAM Ahead was funded through a Title IV Federal Grant.
Each grade was able to engage in different activities through the week. Third grade students studied the physics of playground equipment and put that knowledge into action by creating a model playground. Fourth grade students studied various habitats and created new habitats and environments in which animals could live. Fifth grade students created a golf course of the future by coding dashes to launch ping pong balls to score in a new futuristic golf game. Finally, sixth grade students had to perform rescue scenarios using a variety of technologies, including spheros, drones, and meeperbots. Each student that attended the camps received a “Swag Bag” full of STEM-related toys and a camp t-shirt! A huge thank you to our donors who helped fund the t-shirts: Fort Smith Public Schools Education Foundation, First National Bank, Atlas Apparel, Baldor, Arc Best, Weldon, Williams and Lick, and OG&E.
