Orr Elementary Mentoring Program Helps Community Services Clearinghouse
Orr Elementary students who participate in the mentoring program accompanied their Rheem mentors to the Community Services Clearinghouse. There, they learned that this important organization provides food for people in the community in need. The food is acquired through donations and students were able to learn how the Clearinghouse distributes the food it receives.
Dr. Dawn Childress, Principal at Orr Elementary, said, “This was a great opportunity for our mentors and mentees to get to know each other and begin building relationships while also completing a service learning project. It helps our students understand the work and commitment of volunteers who serve in our community, and it gave them an opportunity to be a part of that great work.”
The group created designs for thank you and Christmas cards for the people who support the Community Services Clearinghouse. They sorted and stacked bags so they would be ready for volunteers to fill for the snack packs that are received by students across the district.
“We are so thankful for our partnership with Rheem! Sherry Sims organized this event and recruited our amazing mentors. Our mentoring program would not be possible without Rheem’s great commitment to our school,” said Dr. Childress.
